The 4th International Equine Industry Program Academic Conference, sponsored by the Department of Equine Business (Equine Industry Program) in the University of Louisville's AACSB-accredited College of Business, was held June 15 - 18, 2005, in Louisville, Kentucky (USA). This edition of the  conference proved to be highly educational and informative and attracted scholars from across the U.S., plus Canada, Ireland, Israel, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.  

Goals: The purpose of these conferences is to offer a comprehensive forum for scholarly research in the business and economics of the horse industry. While emphasis is on pari-mutuel racing, scholarly papers are welcome on all topics relevant to the business of horses and to other forms of legalized gaming and sporting events. An important goal is to encourage scholars to focus on the equine industry, and especially racing.  

Sponsor: The Equine Industry Program was established by the Kentucky Legislature and has been an academic unit of UofL since 1987. It includes the Department of Equine Business and the Center for Equine Management. Its functions are education and research into the business and economic aspects of the horse industry, especially racing, and industry service.

Schedule:  All of the sessions for the presentation and discussion of papers were held at the famous Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville.

Wednesday June 15: An informal Welcoming Reception sponsored by Harrah's Entertainment, Inc. was held from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm at the Galt House.

Friday June 17: After the morning paper session, attendees were invited to "A Day at the Races," sponsored by world renowned Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. Club house admissions, table seating, and lunch were provided by Churchill Downs.

Saturday June 18: A trip to a Lexington area breeding farm, WinStar, and a distillery were provided to attendees.

Call for Papers: Scholars interested in presenting a paper at the 2007 conference, should send abstracts/papers to Prof. Richard Thalheimer, 107 Short Street, Lexington, KY 40507(rthal@gte.net) Telephone: 1-859-255-3073, Fax: 1-859-254-8103. A paper previously published as a working draft, book chapter, research monograph, or even in an academic journal is eligible as long as the subject matter is pertinent and the scholarship is rigorous. Scholars wishing to comment or to attend the conference should make sure their names are on the conference mailing list. 

Deadline for Papers: The deadline for abstracts is September 15, 2006.
